Universal Life Insurance in San Francisco

Universal life can cover you for the rest of your life while letting you pay more or less as your earnings rise and fall. We explain how the policy works, what the insurer's review looks like, and an honest estimate of how long each stage takes.

Permanent coverage that flexes with what you can pay

Universal life is one form of permanent life insurance. Each premium is split: one share buys the coverage, and the remainder goes into a cash value account where the insurer adds interest. Within set limits, you can pay extra in a good year and less in a tight one, and you can change the death benefit later if your needs change.

That payment flexibility is the big appeal, and it brings a duty with it. Underpay for too long and the cash value can be used up, which may let the policy lapse. We show you that risk in simple figures before you apply, so you know what a safe level of funding is for you.

Flexible premiums are most useful when earnings vary, which is common for business owners. We come to your shop or office at the time you choose and give you a clear sense of how long the process will run.

What we take care of

Comparing the main policy designs
We line up guaranteed, current-assumption and indexed universal life. Each treats cash value and long-term guarantees in its own way, and we point out which matches what you're after.
Illustrations in plain terms
Insurers supply illustrations that project how a policy could perform. We go through both the guaranteed and projected columns with you, so you see the conservative outcome next to the optimistic one.
Booking the application and exam
We complete the application alongside you and set up the paramedical exam at a place and time that suit your week. You receive a written list of what the examiner will ask for.
Progress reports while the insurer reviews
The insurer's review commonly runs several weeks, more if your doctor's records are requested. We follow up with the carrier and tell you about any change, delays included.
Naming beneficiaries
We help you choose primary and backup beneficiaries and explain how the way you set up ownership decides who controls the policy.
Delivery plus a yearly review
Once the policy is issued, we read it through with you one page at a time. Every year we can sit down with your statement to make sure the funding is still where it should be.

When universal life could suit you

  • Your earnings go up and down

People paid on commission, contractors and seasonal business owners tend to value adjusting their premium rather than committing to one set amount.

  • You want coverage beyond 80

Term life generally stops before that age. If you want a benefit available late in life for a spouse, business partner or estate expenses, permanent coverage deserves a look.

  • Whole life seems too fixed or expensive

Universal life can frequently provide lifelong coverage at a lower premium than whole life, particularly a guaranteed design that keeps cash value low.

  • You need to fund a buy-sell agreement

Business partners often insure one another so the remaining owner can purchase the other's stake. Universal life can support that setup for as long as the business operates.

  • An older policy no longer adds up

If you bought a universal life policy years back and your statements show the cash value dropping, we can look it over and walk you through your choices.

What drives the premium

Universal life has no one fixed price, since you have a say in how the policy is funded. The insurer charges for coverage based on your age and health, and you decide how much to put in beyond that. Before you apply, we show how each decision changes the figure.

Health class and age

Coverage costs less for younger, healthier people. Your health class is assigned once underwriting is done, so the final premium may not match the first quote.

Smoking and nicotine

Nicotine users and smokers pay clearly higher rates. A few carriers handle vaping or the odd cigar more gently, and we steer you toward those.

Benefit amount and design

A bigger death benefit raises the cost. Guaranteed universal life typically runs cheaper than versions designed to build cash value.

Your funding level

Putting in more than the minimum grows cash value and guards against a lapse. Sticking to the minimum saves money today but leaves a thinner buffer later.

Add-on riders

Options like a chronic illness rider or waiver of premium increase the cost, and we tell you which are worthwhile in your case.

How the process runs, step by step

  1. 1

    First conversation

We talk by phone about who you want to protect and roughly what you can set aside each month. Then we schedule a meeting at your business, usually within the following week or two.

  2. 2

    Quotes and illustrations

We bring quotes from more than one design and go over the guaranteed and projected numbers. There is no pressure to decide that day.

  3. 3

    Application and exam

Once you choose, we complete the application together. The exam is a short visit for vitals, blood and urine, booked at a time you set.

  4. 4

    Underwriting

The insurer reviews your health, records and finances. Plan on roughly four to eight weeks, and we tell you right away if the carrier asks for more information or pushes the timeline.

  5. 5

    Delivery and first payment

We meet to deliver the policy, confirm your beneficiaries and set up premium payments. Coverage generally starts once the policy is accepted and the first premium is paid.

Common questions about universal life

How is universal life different from whole life?

Whole life has one fixed premium, and its cash value grows on a schedule the insurer sets ahead of time. Universal life lets you adjust both the premium and the death benefit within limits, and the cash value grows with whatever interest the insurer credits. You get more flexibility, along with the task of keeping an eye on whether the policy is funded well enough.

Could my universal life policy lapse?

It can, if there isn't enough cash value to pay the monthly coverage charges. That tends to follow years of underfunding or interest credits that come in below projections. Guaranteed designs lower that risk, and a yearly review helps spot trouble early.

When would my coverage begin?

Expect roughly four to eight weeks from the exam to approval for most applications. If the insurer asks for doctor records or more tests, it can run longer. We update you at every stage so you always know where things stand.

Is borrowing against the cash value allowed?

With most policies, yes, after enough cash value has accumulated. Loans charge interest and lower the death benefit if left unpaid. Before you borrow, we show you what the loan would do to your policy.

Will you meet with clients beyond the city?

Yes. In addition to San Francisco, we visit clients at their businesses in Mill Valley, Kentfield, Fairfax, Marin City and Tamalpais-Homestead Valley.

Would term life be a better choice?

When coverage is only needed for a certain stretch, like the years your kids are young, term life insurance is usually cheaper. We're happy to put the two next to each other so you can choose.
